Dental crowns
There are different types of dental crowns as they are both a functional and esthetic treatment.
They are able to replace the patient's natural teeth, and at the same time reinforce teeth that are weakened due to caries, nerve treatments or fractures.
They can be used in the posterior teeth and in the anterior sector as well, although esthetics may be compromised.
When used to rehabilitate posterior teeth (premolars and molars), they provide firmness and restore the patient's ability to chew properly.
To place a dental crown, the tooth must be worn down to reduce its size, then molds must be taken and sent to a dental laboratory, where a technician will make the crown with the ideal color, shape, size and anatomy.
The dental crown is like a cover, hollow inside so that it can fit the natural tooth previously worn. Once the structure is made, it is cemented to the carved tooth and the patient will feel that he/she has his/her natural tooth, forgetting that he/she is wearing a crown, allowing him/her the possibility of using his/her dental piece naturally and confidently.
The types of dental crowns mainly used in dentistry are:
Porcelain-metal crown: These are the most frequently used. It combines the hardness of the metal of its internal coping with the esthetics of porcelain on the outside.
Zirconium crown: Excellent results are obtained due to the resistance they have by their nature. And it favors esthetics because of its white color.
Porcelain full crown: They are mainly used for anterior restorations, where esthetics is the most important factor. These have the characteristic of looking the most natural.
Crowns can be placed on natural teeth, on dental implants or for bridges.
