Root canal treatment in Costa Rica: save your tooth safely and painlessly
Endodontics, known as root canal treatment, is the procedure that removes infected or damaged dental pulp, then cleans and seals the root canals. It allows you to keep your natural tooth instead of extracting it. After a root canal, in most cases we recommend protecting the tooth with a dental crown.

How root canal treatment works
A precise, orderly procedure designed to minimize discomfort and maximize results.
1
Diagnosis and X-ray
Clinical evaluation and digital X-rays to determine the condition of the canals and plan treatment.

Anesthesia and access
Application of highly effective local anesthesia. An opening is made in the crown of the tooth to access the pulp.

Sealing and restoration
Hermetic sealing of the canals with biocompatible material and placement of the final restoration.

Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about root canals
Does a root canal hurt a lot?
Contrary to popular belief, modern root canal treatment is virtually painless thanks to highly effective local anesthesia. During the procedure you will feel pressure but not pain. Post-operative discomfort is mild and manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers.
How long does root canal treatment take?
Most treatments are completed in a single 60-to-90-minute session depending on the complexity of the case. Retreatments or cases with complex anatomy may require more than one visit.
Can I eat normally after treatment?
We recommend waiting until the anesthesia wears off before eating. Afterward you can eat normally, although it is advisable to avoid chewing on the treated side until the final restoration is placed.
How long does a root canal-treated tooth last?
With the right restoration and good oral hygiene, a root canal-treated tooth can last a lifetime. The key is completing the final restoration (crown or filling) after treatment.
Is a crown mandatory after a root canal?
Not always, but it is highly recommended in most cases. A root canal-treated tooth loses moisture and becomes more fragile. A crown protects it from fractures and significantly extends its lifespan.
What happens if I don't get treated in time?
If treatment is postponed, the infection can spread to the jawbone, cause serious abscesses and make saving the tooth impossible. Acting quickly improves the prognosis and can avoid extraction and the need for an implant.
