3D DENTAL CT SCAN
What is a 3D dental CT scan and why is it superior?
Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is a diagnostic technique that obtains three-dimensional images of the teeth, upper jaw and lower jaw with unprecedented resolution. Unlike a conventional X-ray, which shows a flat two-dimensional image, CBCT lets us view every structure from any angle with millimetric accuracy.
Advantages over conventional X-rays:
- A three-dimensional image vs. a flat two-dimensional one
- Higher resolution and detail of bone structures
- Visualization of nerves, sinuses and soft tissues
- Allows distances and angles to be measured precisely
- Essential for guided implantology and oral surgery
CLINICAL APPLICATIONS
Which treatments use the 3D scan?
CBCT is the reference diagnostic tool in multiple dental specialties.
MOST RECOMMENDED
Implantology
Guided planning of dental implants
- Exact measurement of bone volume
- Precise location of the dental nerve
- Virtual positioning of the implant
- Reduced surgical risks
Oral surgery
Wisdom teeth, cysts and complex cases
- Location of impacted teeth
- Evaluation of cysts and bone pathologies
- Planning of complex extractions
- Analysis of adjacent tissues
Endodontics and orthodontics
Root anatomy and skeletal analysis
- Detects additional canals not otherwise visible
- 3D analysis of dental and skeletal position
- Evaluation of root resorption
- Planning of complex movements
SCANORA® 3D TECHNOLOGY

WHAT IS THE PROCESS LIKE?
Getting a 3D dental CT scan is quick and uncomplicated
The whole process takes less than 30 minutes from the moment you arrive at the clinic.
1
Patient positioning
We position you correctly in the SCANORA® 3D unit to guarantee a quality image of the area of clinical interest.
2
Image capture
Exposure lasts less than 15 seconds. The unit rotates around the head capturing hundreds of images that are reconstructed in 3D.
3
Reconstruction and analysis
The software immediately generates the three-dimensional image, which the specialist analyzes in different planes and angles.
4
Treatment plan
Based on the scan, the specialist designs the personalized surgical or therapeutic plan for your case.
DIAGNOSTIC SOFTWARE
3D digital analysis for high-precision diagnoses
The SCANORA® 3D system works with latest-generation software that lets us view the image from any slice, measure structures with millimetric precision, virtually plan the ideal position of implants and export the data to surgical guides. All this translates into safer, more predictable and more efficient treatments.
- Measurement of bone density and volume
- Virtual 3D implant planning
- Export to surgical guides
- Analysis of nerves and anatomical structures
WHO NEEDS IT?
Cases that require a 3D dental CT scan
Not every case requires a 3D scan, but in the following scenarios it is practically essential:
- Planning of single or multiple dental implants
- Evaluation of impacted wisdom teeth
- Root canal treatments in complex anatomy
- Diagnosis of cysts, tumors or bone pathologies
- Orthognathic surgery planning
- Orthodontic cases with retained teeth

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Everything you should know about the 3D dental CT scan
How does a 3D scan differ from a panoramic X-ray?
A panoramic X-ray is a two-dimensional image that shows the whole dentition on one plane. A 3D scan generates a three-dimensional image with slices in all planes, allowing structures to be measured, bone density evaluated and implants planned with millimetric precision.
Is a 3D dental CT scan safe?
Yes. CBCT uses considerably lower radiation doses than a conventional medical CT scan, and significantly below established safety limits. The SCANORA® 3D unit is designed to optimize the dose without compromising image quality.
How long does the process take?
Image capture takes less than 15 seconds. The complete process, including positioning and analysis, takes approximately 15 to 30 minutes depending on the complexity of the case.
Do I need to prepare in any way before the scan?
No special preparation is required. We only recommend removing metal objects from the head and neck (earrings, chains, metal eyeglass frames) before the scan to avoid artifacts in the image.
Can I request a copy of my scan?
Yes. The scan is archived digitally in your record. You can request it at any time to share with another specialist. It is delivered in a standard format compatible with most viewing software.
Is a scan necessary for all implants?
Yes, it is an essential part of the planning protocol. It allows us to measure bone volume and density, identify the exact position of the dental nerve and design the surgery more safely. Without a scan, we cannot guarantee a predictable result.
Do you need a 3D dental CT scan to plan your treatment?
With the SCANORA® 3D system we obtain the most complete diagnosis available. Schedule your consultation and receive a detailed analysis of your case.
