DIGITAL RADIOGRAPHY
Digital dental X-rays in Costa Rica: precise diagnosis with minimal radiation
Digital radiography is an imaging technology that replaces traditional X-ray films with digital sensors. The result is a high-resolution image available in seconds, with significantly less radiation exposure and greater diagnostic capability. For a complete view of the entire dentition, see also our panoramic X-ray.
- Up to 80% less radiation than conventional X-rays
- Immediate digital image on screen

DIGITAL RADIOGRAPHY
Advanced dental diagnosis with high-resolution images
Digital radiography is an imaging technology that replaces traditional X-ray films with digital sensors. The result is a high-resolution image available in seconds, with significantly less radiation exposure and greater diagnostic capability.
When is a dental X-ray required?
- Initial diagnosis and treatment planning
- Detection of cavities between teeth
- Evaluation of dental implants and surgeries
- Follow-up of orthodontic and orthopedic treatments
- Assessment of infections, cysts or root fractures
AVAILABLE TYPES
Digital X-ray options at our clinic
We have the main types of radiographic imaging to cover any clinical need.
MOST RECOMMENDED
Periapical
For individual teeth and their roots
- Shows crown, root and alveolar bone
- Ideal for endodontics and implants
- High-resolution detail
- Fast, with minimal exposure
Panoramic
A complete view of the entire dentition
- Includes both jaws
- Detects impacted teeth and wisdom teeth
- Evaluation before orthodontics
- A single shot for the whole mouth
3D CBCT
High-precision three-dimensional imaging
- A three-dimensional image of the maxillofacial complex
- Essential for implant surgery
- Assesses nerves, sinuses and bone tissue
- Greater precision in complex cases
ADVANTAGES FOR THE PATIENT
Why digital radiography makes the difference

HOW DOES IT WORK?
The digital X-ray process, step by step
A quick, painless procedure with no waiting that provides essential diagnostic information.
1
Sensor positioning
We place the digital sensor in the correct position to capture the image needed for the area being evaluated.
2
Exposure and capture
Exposure time is minimal — the system captures the image in fractions of a second with the lowest possible dose.
3
Immediate viewing
The image appears on screen in seconds, ready to be analyzed by the specialist.
4
Diagnosis and treatment plan
The clinician analyzes the image, explains the findings to the patient and defines the personalized action plan.
TECHNOLOGY
Latest-generation digital X-ray equipment
We have digital periapical and panoramic radiography systems and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). This equipment uses high-sensitivity sensors that reduce the radiation dose to the essential minimum, producing sharper images than conventional X-rays.
- High-resolution digital periapical sensors
- Digital orthopantomograph for panoramic X-rays
- CBCT for three-dimensional imaging
- Integrated diagnostic analysis software
WHO NEEDS IT?
Dental X-rays are an essential part of your diagnosis

- First visit or annual check-up
- Unexplained tooth pain or sensitivity
- Planning of implants, surgery or orthodontics
- Suspected infection, cyst or root fracture
- Follow-up of ongoing treatments
- Patients with periodontal disease

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Everything you need to know about digital dental X-rays
Is the radiation from dental X-rays dangerous?
No. Digital dental radiography uses extremely low radiation doses, up to 80% less than conventional systems. The total exposure of a complete series is equivalent to a fraction of the natural radiation we receive every day.
Can pregnant women have X-rays?
In general, dental X-rays are avoided during pregnancy unless it is an emergency. When necessary, lead shields are used and the dose is minimal. Always inform the specialist if you are pregnant.
How often should dental X-rays be taken?
It depends on each patient’s oral health. For healthy patients, a panoramic X-ray every 2–3 years and periapical X-rays as clinically needed are generally recommended. For patients with active decay or periodontal disease, the frequency may be higher.
What is the difference between a periapical and a panoramic X-ray?
A periapical X-ray shows one or a few teeth in detail, including the root and supporting bone. A panoramic offers an overview of the entire dentition and the structures of the upper and lower jaw in a single image.
What is a CBCT scan and when is it needed?
A CBCT scan produces three-dimensional images of the maxillofacial structure. It is mainly used in dental implant planning, third molar surgery, wisdom teeth evaluation and complex endodontic cases.
Are the images kept in my record?
Yes. All X-rays are stored digitally in your electronic clinical record. You can request them at any time to share with another specialist or for future reference.
Do you need a precise radiographic diagnosis without delays?
We have every type of digital X-ray, from periapicals to 3D scans. Schedule your consultation and receive a complete diagnosis of your oral health.
