A panoramic X-ray — also called an orthopantomogram — is a radiographic exam that captures in a single image the entire upper and lower dentition, the jawbones, the temporomandibular joints and the maxillary sinuses. The whole procedure takes less than 10 minutes, with no discomfort or prior preparation.

Positioning
The patient stands or sits at the unit. The chin is positioned and the patient is asked to gently bite a stabilizing support.

Image capture
The unit rotates in a semicircle around the head for approximately 15 to 20 seconds, capturing the complete image.

The digital panoramic X-ray appears on screen in seconds, ready to be analyzed by the specialist.

Interpretation and diagnosis
The clinician reviews the image in detail, identifies the relevant findings and explains them clearly to the patient.

Everything you should know about panoramic dental X-rays
Is a panoramic X-ray painful?
No. It is a completely painless, non-invasive procedure. You only need to stay still for the 15–20 seconds the unit takes to rotate.
How much radiation does a panoramic X-ray emit?
The radiation dose is very low. With digital technology, it is significantly lower than conventional analog equipment. Total exposure is comparable to what we receive naturally on a short flight.
Can it be done during pregnancy?
It is generally avoided during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester. If necessary, protective measures are used and the dose is minimal. Always inform the specialist if you are pregnant.
How often should I get a panoramic X-ray?
Generally every 2 to 3 years is recommended for healthy adult patients. In children and adolescents, the frequency may be higher to monitor dental development. The specialist will indicate the appropriate frequency for each case.
Does a panoramic X-ray replace periapical X-rays?
They are complementary. The panoramic offers a global view of the whole mouth, while the periapical shows a specific tooth and its root in detail. In many cases both are used for a complete diagnosis.
Can I get a copy of my X-ray?
Yes. The image is archived digitally in your record and you can request it at any time to send to another specialist or keep for future reference.
