What are dental implants?
The dental implant is a cylindrical element made of titanium coated by a biocompatible material with the body, that is, it does not degrade, it integrates perfectly into the bone and does not produce rejection of it, it has threads so it is introduced threaded to the bone, joining it through a process called osseointegration, this implant does exclusively the function of the tooth root and occupies the space of the same, so you have to add the crown which is the part that would give the functionality both chewing and aesthetics. There are two fundamental presentations of implants: cylindrical and screwed. The implant consists of a body, which is the one that is introduced into the bone and a cover or healing screw, which does not allow tissue to form towards the internal thread of the implant.
Once the loss of a tooth has occurred, the patient may not feel the need to restore it, but the consequences of not doing so may come in the medium term because the adjacent teeth tend to move towards the free space, and the antagonist teeth or those that collided with this lost tooth tend to move vertically looking for that contact that is no longer there, altering the position of all the teeth and their normal function of meshing at the moment of chewing, causing alterations in the other teeth and disorders at the level of the jaw joint called temporomandibular joint.
The dental implants are placed by sequential drilling in the bone starting with drills of smaller diameter, up to the diameter of the implant to be placed, once the space is achieved, the implant is placed threaded to the bone.
There are different types of implants, and the choice of which one to use will be determined exclusively by the dentist, evaluating the condition of the bones and the habits of each patient.
One-stage or immediate loading implants, which are those that can receive masticatory loads immediately after surgery.
Two-stage or late loading implants are those that once the implant is placed, you have to wait for the healing process and osseointegration of the implant with the bone to later place the crown and become functional.
The most common brands of dental implants used in Costa Rica are from Zimmer Biomet, MIS, and NeoBiotech. At Sonrisa Para Todos we mainly use Zimmer Biomet and NeoBiotech implants.
