What is periodontics?

Periodontics is the branch of dentistry that treats the periodontium, studies the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of all diseases and conditions that affect it. The periodontium is nothing more than all the hard and soft tissues that surround a dental structure, such as the alveolar bone, periodontal ligament and gum. These tissues are very vulnerable to the appearance of different diseases that affect it, such as gingivitis and periodontitis. Being the early diagnosis and effective treatment, a fundamental part to prevent the loss of teeth.

The most common pathologies affecting the periodontium are gingivitis and periodontitis:

Gingivitis is a disease that causes bleeding and irritation of the gums without producing bone loss, and if treated in time it is reversible. If it is not treated in time, it can worsen and form periodontitis.

Periodontitis is also a chronic disease that produces inflammation and irritation of the gums and causes irreversible loss of the alveolar bone, resulting in the loss of teeth if it is not stopped in time and properly treated.

The occurrence of any of these diseases may be due to different factors, but the predominant one will always be caused by the accumulation of bacterial plaque (which is a sticky plaque that forms on the surface of the teeth) and dental calculus (tartar) due to inadequate oral hygiene both on the teeth and under the gum. There are also factors that contribute to the development of these diseases and in case they are already present they can aggravate them rapidly such as smoking, stress, presence of dental crowding, diabetes, hormonal changes among others.

Periodontal diseases not only affect the oral cavity, but when they are in a more chronic and uncontrolled state, they contribute to the appearance of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and pregnancy complications.

The periodontal treatment to be applied is completely personalized and varies according to the oral condition of each patient. It generally ranges from a conventional dental cleaning, to deeper dental cleanings with scaling and root planing and different types of periodontal surgeries.

The appearance of periodontal diseases can be avoided through proper oral hygiene, by brushing teeth with the proper technique, use of specific toothpastes for each case, use of mouthwashes and an indispensable and vital way is the use of dental floss. As well as regular visits to the dentist at least every 6 months, where a professional dental cleaning can be performed and an early diagnosis of any anomaly can be made.
