Dental caries, the second most common disease worldwide.
After the common cold, dental caries is the second most common disease worldwide.
Caries is considered a chronic disease that produces the loss of minerals in the tooth and therefore produces a hole or dark cavity in it. In its initial stage it may not have any symptoms, but as it progresses it can produce pain.
Factors that affect the appearance of dental caries:
- Poor oral hygiene
- Diet high in sugars, carbohydrates, acids and carbonated beverages
- Teeth with deep fissures and crowded or poorly positioned teeth.
What are the treatments for caries?
The treatment is based on the removal by a dentist of the part of the tooth that has decay and then restore or repair it. The type of restoration to be used will depend on the size and location of the decay, ranging from the smallest which is a resin, to the most extensive which is an inlay or dental crown. In some cases the decay causes so much damage that the tooth cannot be repaired and has to be extracted.

When extraction is unavoidable, the space where the tooth was must be restored immediately to restore the chewing and esthetic function to the patient's mouth. This way we avoid that space being occupied by neighboring teeth.
There are different options to restore this space, such as removable prostheses, fixed bridges and dental implants, the latter being the most recommended because of its greater durability, allowing bone preservation.
At Sonrisa Para todos we have placed more than 14,000 dental implants in the last 15 years.
