What is a dental inlay?

The dental inlay is a restoration that is prepared at the oral level by the dentist and sent to a dental laboratory to be made in order to repair a piece of the posterior sector that has been affected by decay or trauma and where one or more dental walls are compromised so they have a moderate damage. These restorations are larger than a resin or shim, but at the same time smaller than a dental crown. Some characteristics of a dental inlay are as follows:

They are made by a dental laboratory and can be made of different materials such as: composite resins, porcelain, zirconium and in the past they were also made of alloys such as gold.

The process of placing a dental inlay requires at least two dental appointments. The first one is for the removal of the caries in case it is present, the dental structure is prepared to provide the specific shape to accommodate the inlay, and a dental impression is taken which can be digital or analog which is sent to the laboratory for the making of the inlay and a temporary inlay is placed in the dental piece. In the second appointment, the temporary inlay is removed and the inlay sent by the laboratory is definitively cemented. If endodontics (nerve treatment) is required beforehand, these appointments can be extended.

Dental inlays are designed and customized for each patient to fit perfectly in the space to be restored and have the proper aesthetics to look natural when made with aesthetic materials such as composite resins, porcelain and zirconia. In addition, it restores the masticatory function, being able to adequately withstand the forces of occlusion.

They are generally more durable restorations than resins or shims.
