Why do dentures loosen?
Total removable dental prostheses are commonly known by different names such as plates, veneers, tooth plates, dentures, among others. These prostheses after some time of use many patients report that they loosen and do not fit as before. We will explain some of the most common reasons why this may occur:
Bone resorption: This is the main and most common cause. Once the teeth are lost, the bone that supports the teeth (the alveolar bone) begins to decrease in size over time irreversibly. Therefore, the support that the prosthesis had initially is not the same and must be adjusted. The only way to stop or greatly reduce this bone loss is through the use of dental implants.
Loss of gingival tissue:As bone support is lost, the gingival tissues are modified in parallel to adapt to the change, so there is a reduction of the alveolar ridge not only in quantity but also in shape.
Wear of the prosthesis:With daily use, the acrylic with which the prosthesis is made wears out, causing misalignments, not only in the base of the prosthesis but also in the teeth that wear out with use.
Inadequate use and care of the prosthesis: When the cleaning of the removable dental prosthesis is done inadequately using abrasive pastes or substances that can alter the surface of the same not only in the adhesion but also in the aesthetic characteristics of the same as loss of brightness so they look more opaque, and also inadequate storage produces deformations in the material.
As well as the deficiency of cleanliness of the prosthesis causes tartar, stains and the soft tissues of the mouth are affected by fungus.
The total removable prosthesis always have to be removed from the mouth at night before sleeping, this in order to let the gum and soft tissues "rest", there are many patients who do not remove the prosthesis because they feel sorry for their partner, because they forget or because they do not know and this can develop diseases such as prosthetic stomatitis which is nothing more than a chronic inflammation of the oral mucosa by the continuous use of prostheses.
It is commonly thought that the only option to restore the complete absence of teeth is by means of these removable restorations, which may be more economical, but they are uncomfortable, decrease the patient's taste sensation, in most cases greatly affect self-esteem and mainly do not prevent the loss of alveolar bone, which is so important to maintain facial fullness and proper chewing function.
At Sonrisa Para Todos we offer fixed options to restore the total absence of teeth, either with dental implants using the ALL on 4 technique, or if the alveolar bone is insufficient, we have the latest technological advances where we can also rehabilitate with subperiosteal implants.
Testimonials from our own patients who have changed from a removable to a fixed total prosthesis indicate that they can taste food better, chew with more confidence and eat foods that they could not before, they smile more without fear of dislodging the prosthesis, feeling much more comfortable and confident, the aesthetics is much better. There are also noticeable changes in the patients' mood since they dare to perform more daily activities without fear of having any discomfort or bad moment as when they had the removable treatment.
