Bad breath
Halitosis, better known as bad breath, can cause embarrassment, limiting the social and working life of some people. It is a multifactorial condition, it can be directly related to the oral cavity or to systemic conditions, so the origin must be discovered for a correct diagnosis and adequate treatment plan.
The main causes may be:
- Poor oral hygiene:Â Product of bacterial decomposition due to food debris that is trapped between the teeth when not removed. Therefore, flossing, proper brushing and use of mouthwash are recommended.
- Gingivitis and Periodontitis:Â Commonly called gum disease, it is caused by a bacterial infection in the tissue surrounding the tooth. When this happens, bad breath is persistent due to the accumulation of bacteria in the oral cavity. Optimal sanitation and periodic visits to the dentist for deep cleanings are recommended.
- Dry mouth:Â It occurs when the flow of saliva in the mouth decreases. Saliva is the body's natural method of cleaning the mouth. Some medical conditions or breathing through the mouth can cause bad breath. Chewing sugarless gum will help the production of saliva, favoring this condition.
- Language:Â It is one of the most common reasons for bad breath. The white coating that forms on the tongue acts as a carpet where food debris and bacteria can accumulate. Cleaning it regularly can make a big difference in the quality of breath.
- Food consumed:Â Certain foods, especially garlic and onions, contain strong components, which contribute to bad breath because they are carried into the lungs and then out through the mouth. To counteract this you should brush your teeth as soon as possible, however bad breath may not disappear completely.
- Smoking:Â It leaves the characteristic odor of tobacco, and in turn the smoke favors the decrease of saliva flow in the mouth, which causes it to dry producing bad breath. It is recommended to quit this habit because of its effect on the oral cavity and other damages it causes to the heart and lungs.
- Untreated diseases:Â When bad breath persists, it may be a sign of other health problems such as respiratory infections, chronic sinusitis, chronic bronchitis, or gastrointestinal problems. If any of these are present, it is best to visit a physician specializing in the area to treat the condition with the appropriate medications according to the case.
Bad breath affects not only the sufferer but also those around them, it is important to know that there is always a cause which can be treated.
It is recommended to visit your dentist and have your teeth cleaned every six months to ensure good oral health.
