Gum disease?

Gum disease?

Have you noticed that your teeth look long, or are loose, or that your gums are red or bleeding? You may have periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease is commonly called gum disease or pyorrhea. It consists of a progressive infection of the tissues that surround and support the tooth.

Periodontitis, unlike other conditions, has the particularity of not producing pain. In many cases the pain serves as an alert for the patient to realize that something is wrong. Therefore, other warning symptoms should be taken into account. Among these may be: constant bad breath, swollen, sensitive and red gums, discomfort when chewing, and loose teeth.

This condition does not occur overnight, so you should pay close attention if you identify yourself with some of the above symptoms.

When a periodontal disease process occurs, esthetics is compromised, because the gums recede causing the teeth to look very long, with spaces accompanied by migrations producing bad dental positions and changes in the bite.

What to do if you already have the disease?

The first priority is to control the infection. The type of treatment may vary depending on how advanced the disease is, it may require from deep cleaning to periodontal surgery in order to remove bacteria, plaque and tartar.

The main way to avoid this condition is prevention, since there is a genetic component that causes patients to have a predisposition to present periodontal problems, in addition to poor oral hygiene or poor brushing technique.

We recommend:

  • Brushing teeth three times a day
  • Flossing and rinsing
  • Perform every six months cleaning with the dentist.
  • Avoidance of tobacco use
