Is dental esthetics important?

Dental esthetics

It is said that smiling is the universal language regardless of age, origin, language or gender; if we smile anywhere in the world, it will mean exactly the same thing. Smiling is a natural gesture with which we reflect joy, that we are well and that we feel comfortable.

For this reason, cosmetic dentistry has the great challenge of redesigning dental pieces, so that each patient feels confident to show off his or her smile.

Among the main aesthetic treatments are:

Orthodontics:

Commonly called "braces", orthodontics is not only for esthetic purposes but also for functional ones. Currently there are different systems that fit the needs of each patient. Among these are metallic orthodontics, which is the most commonly used and is carried out with metal brackets; aesthetic orthodontics, sapphire brackets are used which are completely transparent; lingual orthodontics: in this technique the brackets are placed on the palatal faces or behind the teeth; and the Essix system or transparent aligners consisting of a series of covers that are changed according to the indication of the orthodontist. All of them are highly effective and their choice depends on the particularity of the case and what the patient desires.

Bleaching:

This is a procedure that allows lightening the shade of the patient's teeth. This is one of the most conservative treatments in esthetic dentistry.

There are two types:

  1. Office whitening: It can be performed with or without light. It consists of applying a whitening gel accompanied by a barrier that protects the gum. It takes approximately 45 minutes. The amount of lightening achieved will depend on the specific conditions of each patient. In some cases a touch-up at home is required.
  2. House whitening: Molds are taken to make transparent caps that the patient wears at home with the whitening gel, usually for two weeks. The advantage of this system is that it allows for greater control of tooth sensitivity.

Dental veneers:

They are performed to correct shape, color and slight malposition of teeth. They can be performed with or without dental wear. The advantage is that in approximately three appointments the patient can obtain a whiter, more symmetrical, more harmonious and completely new smile.

The basis for the success of any dental treatment is to have a correct planning with molds, photographs, wax-ups and clinical assessment in order to work in a more predictable way.
