Do you brush your teeth immediately after eating? Avoid doing so! Read here why

If you clicked on this post it is likely that you are one of the people who make this common mistake and you need to avoid making it.

The pH is a measure that allows us to determine the degree of acidity and/or alkalinity of an element. The pH level at which the mouth should be found in normal conditions is 6.5 to 7, being considered a neutral to alkaline pH. Dental caries develops at acidic pH levels.

Soft drinks, even if they are light or zero sugars, have a pH of at least 2.5 being quite acidic and even similar to the pH of vinegar.

Acid produces a favorable environment for bacteria that cause demineralization of the teeth, making them more prone to wear, decay and erosion. If the teeth are brushed immediately after eating, the demineralization process will be intensified because not only will the acid spread all over the teeth, but it will also rub on the teeth, further enhancing its effect, making the teeth more vulnerable.

The ideal after food intake is to rinse the mouth with water, and then wait 30 minutes to proceed with tooth brushing. The saliva in the mouth has the ability to regulate the pH by itself through a process called buffering capacity, and it takes about half an hour to restore the pH of the saliva to its normal condition.
