How do we make the diagnosis when teeth have been lost?
When a patient has suffered the loss of one, several or all of his or her teeth, it is common for him or her to think about replacing them at some point in his or her life, sometimes taking years to make this decision.
When a tooth is extracted, the root stops stimulating the bone that supports it, causing a resorption of the alveolar bone. This means that the bone structure gradually "dries out" and loses its dimensions, making it difficult to carry out a fixed restoration by means of dental implants.
The assessment for dental implants consists mainly of three parts:
- Anamnesis: An exhaustive evaluation is performed to know in detail the physical condition of the patient, what diseases he/she suffers from, what medications he/she takes and what parafunctional habits he/she presents. It is of utmost importance that the person provides this information accurately and does not omit any details, since certain conditions or medications can affect the process of dental implant integration to the bone.
- Radiographic evaluation: Two examinations are performed: panoramic radiography (2D) and tomography (3D), the latter in order to meticulously analyze the condition of the patient's bone to know if he/she is a candidate for dental implant treatment and in turn to know what size implant to use and choose the position in which it will be placed.
- Clinical assessment: It is carried out to check aspects such as occlusion and the spaces that the patient has in the mouth, fundamental data to be able to know what type of restoration will be performed and even with what material to perform the rehabilitation.
In the absence of teeth, our recommendation is always to replace them in a timely manner in order to have optimal conditions.
It is important to take into account that complex rehabilitations should be checked and cleaned every six months to ensure that the treatment can last for many years.
